Books, toys, little things, and Barbie clothes needed

We are now collecting donations for our Mayfair Book & Toy Sale and Mason Jar Sale. Clean out those basements and help with these great fundraisers!

Book & Toy Sale

We need gently used books, DVDs, toys, puzzles, games, video games/gaming electronics and small entertainment electronics. All items must be clean and in working condition with all the pieces intact. Drop items off in the front entrance of the school from May 14th until May 25th. No Saturday drop-offs, please.

Mason Jar Sale

Bring in small items like: wrapped treats/goodies, small toys/cars/figurines, kids’ jewelry, Lego/building blocks, craft/art supplies – things that kids would like. Please put items in bags (no mason jars needed). Drop items off in the front entrance of the school from May 7th until May 21st.

Help Barbie with some clothes!

A large number of Barbie dolls were donated to us for our Mason Jars & Book/Toy Sale but unfortunately most didn’t have clothing included. If you have any to spare, please consider donating them. All barbie clothing can be dropped off at the front Mayfair table.

Thank you in advance for all your wonderful donations!

Please bring Lunch Lady packaging home for recycling

The Lunch Lady is the newest addition to our Lunch Program. We’re glad to see lots of orders coming in and the kids enjoying it!

Due to the types of food that are delivered from the Lunch Lady program, there is a lot of recyclable packaging that ends up in the school garbage bins. We would like to request that you ask your kids to bring the packaging home so that it can be recycled properly.

Thank you for your cooperation!

Bins, plastic baskets, paper box lids needed for Mayfair

We are getting organized for our Mayfair Book & Toy sale.

As we do every year, we are looking to borrow your:

  • plastic tubs/bins with lids to store/transport all our sale items
  • plastic baskets and various organization bins big enough to fit books of various sizes, small toys and so on, are also highly needed
  • also, anyone that has a workplace who orders those big boxes of copy paper – the cardboard lids for those boxes are very useful for keeping adults chapter books upright for display.

Please consider looking for some of those cardboard lids and pulling out any organization bins that you may have. The more we have, the easier it will be to keep our sorting station organized and enable the volunteers to easily move everything to the classroom on set-up night.

Drop off any of the above at the front of the school, near the drop-off table for mason jar items/book toy sale items.

Please be sure to label all your bins. After Mayfair, they will be left along the brick wall in the kinder wing for you to pick up.

Thank you for your help!

More about yoga & kids and our instructor

Why do Yoga with Children?

Children and yoga are a great combination. Yoga poses provide fertile ground for the imagination as children can become birds, dogs, lions, crocodiles, airplanes, bicycles, anything you can imagine. Yoga gets bodies moving and stretching and spends some of that endless energy kids seem to have. Yoga is a great way to get children and adults in touch with their bodies and emotions.

Using Stories to Teach Yoga and Discuss Emotions

In my classes, I tell a story and participants “act it out” through yoga poses. For example, if there is a tree in the story, we become the tree by doing tree pose. The stories keep children interested and provide opportunities to engage with children on subjects that don’t always come up naturally in everyday life, such as how to deal with difficult emotions like guilt, fear and anger. When we encounter certain situations in the stories, I ask the children how they would feel if they were in this situation. During these conversations, we focus on what kind of sensations may arise in the body given a certain situation and do a practice together designed to work with those sensations in a positive way.

The Instructor

I am Heather Cross, a mother of two young boys, a lawyer, a yoga teacher and a mindfulness instructor. I completed my 200-hour yoga teacher training at the Rama Lotus Yoga Centre in 2006 and have taught yoga at various studios, workplaces and community centres since that time. I completed my mindfulness instructor training at the Ottawa Mindfulness Clinic in 2014 and have taught at the Clinic since that time. This year, I opened a small yoga and mindfulness studio in Alta Vista called the Here and Now Studio.

Multicultural table at Mayfair

Roots and Routes: Celebrating Lakeview’s shared multicultural history

Lakeview P.S. will be having a multicultural table at its annual Mayfair festival on Saturday May 26, 2018. Volunteers are needed! You can help by:

  • Bringing in books and artifacts that display your country of origin
  • Planning crafts and games
  • Participating at the multicultural table on the day of Mayfair. You can volunteer for a few hours or less, depending on your schedule.

Any ideas on how we can make this activity even more fun and engaging? Please contact Lindsay Mattesz at lindsay.mattesz@ocdsb.ca with questions or to volunteer.
