New parent survey on changes to French instruction in English schools and Early French Immersion schools

The Board has updated its website and posted new information for parents and staff about the proposed changes to the delivery of French language instruction in JK/SK (in ALL schools) and in Grades 1 to 3 in Early French Immersion (like Lakeview). There is now an extended consultation process. Yesterday you received an important information sheet. Please read this!! More resources about the first round of consultations, staff input and research references are also on the OCSDB website. Parents are encouraged to complete the Parent Survey between now and January 11. If you have questions about what this means for your child, please contact the Lakeview principal, Mme Shields, at 613-828-8077.

Changes to French Instruction for JK/SK and Grades 1 – 3 Early French Immersion

As many of you may know, the Ottawa Carleton District School Board recently conducted consultations on changes it proposed to make to French Instruction for JK/SK and Grades 1, 2 & 3 EFI. The results of the consultation indicated that a significant number of parents and teachers had concerns about the changes, which included: the reasons behind the proposal, the lack of input from educators prior to submitting the proposal, the lack of adequate consultation (less than one month) for stakeholders to review, investigate and respond; and, the lack of evidence and research provided to support this proposal.

After a meeting of the Committee of the Whole last night (November 17), the Board has decided to delay pursuit of this proposal noting especially the concerns about insufficient consultations and lack of evidence supporting the proposed changes. See the CBC news article.

Hear practical examples of how we may become physically literate in our own lives as students, teachers, and parents.

IMPORTANT Consultation – Changes to French Instruction for Kindergarten and Primary Early French Immersion (EFI)

The OCDSB is considering and consulting on changes to French-language instruction for the JK and SK programs starting 2016-2017. There is a small window for parents to have a say in these changes, majority of which will impact Lakeview as an EFI site. Some of the proposed changes include:

  • moving to a 50/50 French-English instruction for both JK and SK (in both the English and Early French Immersion (EFI) programs);
  • addition of 60-minutes of English instruction for Grade 1 EFI;
  • changing Math instruction to English (instead of French) for Primary EFI (Gr. 1-3) programs; and
  • staffing changes potentially with a decrease of 101 English Full-time equivalent (FTE) teachers and a gain of 95 FTE French-Second Language (FSL) teachers

Please go to this link, review the information provided including a helpful video, and complete the Parent Survey.

This proposed policy will also be discussed at Lakeview Council’s upcoming meeting on Tuesday, October 13. If you have questions or concerns about the impacts on our school, students and staff, we encourage you to come to this meeting.
