Parent Workshop: The Math Guru on May 19

As a result of receiving a “Parent Reaching Out” Grant, our School Council (along with councils from Roland Michener PS and Rockcliffe Park PS) has been able to schedule a parent workshop about math. Please see details below:

How to Raise Kids Who Aren’t Afraid of Math (Even If You Are)!
Speaker: Vanessa The Math Guru
Date: Thursday, May 19, 2022
Time: 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

The Math Guru was founded in 2010 by Vanessa Vakharia, a certified high school math teacher with a Masters in Mathematics Education. Vanessa used to hate math. In fact, she failed grade 11 math twice (twice!) and decided she was simply not a “math person.” Then she changed schools. She decided to brave another math course with an open mind. This is when she realized: There is no such thing as a “math person.” Click on this link to learn more about Vanessa The Math Guru.

Each school has a limit of 50 participants. Sign up now by clicking this link to join us in numeracy learning. A Google Meet invite will be sent to you by 5:00 pm on 19 May.

Beyond ABC’s and 123’s: Building Learning Skills and Confidence in Your Child – January 20

Parents, grandparents are invited to participate in a free presentation at Lakeview P.S. on January 20 at 6:30 PM. This is offered by our Board’s speech-language pathologists. Learn how to be an active participant in supporting your child mental and cognitive development! Free child-minding for ‘school age children’ will be provided by your School Council. Light snacks and refreshments also provided.

Beyond ABC’s and 123’s: Building Learning Skills and Confidence in Your Child

This presentation explains to parents what executive functions are and how to foster them in their school aged child, including explaining the gradual release of responsibility, using declarative language and building independence.

Executive functioning training will focus on how executive function and self-regulation skills are the mental processes that enable us to plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and juggle multiple tasks successfully, and are required to develop and use the learning skills listed on the report card. Each skill draws on elements of the others, and the successful application of executive function skills requires them to operate in coordination with each other.

The main predictor of later academic success is strong executive functioning skills, however studies are showing that children today are more dis-regulated than children 15 year ago.
